The route: hiking, scrambling and desert views
The journey combines a walking approach with hands-on scrambling through granite passages towards the False Summit, at approximately 1,650 metres. Expect steep rock, ledges and exposed sections where steady footing and confidence with heights matter. Allow time and energy for the descent as well as the ascent.
Inside the Gulley Route
Climb Away’s 2026–2027 Spitzkoppe Rock Climbing Overview identifies the Gulley Route as the preferred False Summit outing. The route material describes an approach from Boulder Valley, below Hippo Rock, before the terrain becomes a combination of boulders, rock passages and steeper scrambling.
Chains and the terrace. The gully includes fixed-chain sections and leads towards a terrace above the south-west wall. These features make this a hands-on mountain outing: comfort on exposed rock matters as much as walking fitness. A chain section is not the same experience as an easy trail.
Upper route choices. The route diagram shows two upper variations, with features including narrow ramps, a cave and a fig tree. Your guide selects the appropriate line for conditions and the group; these are route features to discuss in your briefing, rather than a promise that every variation will be visited.
What you can see. The south-west ridge opens views towards the Pontoks to the east and Kleine Spitzkoppe to the west. The main summit remains a separate objective above this route.

The False Summit is a different objective from the true Spitzkoppe summit. Reaching the true summit is a separate technical rock-climbing outing. Explore guided Spitzkoppe climbing if that is the adventure you have in mind.
How difficult is the False Summit hike?
This is a moderate-to-challenging outing for guests with good fitness and confidence on steep, exposed rock. It includes scrambling, where you use your hands as well as your feet. Tell us about your hiking experience and comfort with heights when enquiring so we can assess whether this route suits you.
Your guide makes route and turnaround decisions according to conditions and group readiness. Reaching the False Summit is an objective, not a guarantee. If you prefer gentle walking or are uncomfortable with exposure, ask about a Rock Arch walk instead.
Duration, price and inclusions
Allow approximately 5–6 hours including the descent. The price is N$1,950 per person. If no local guide is available, an additional N$3,500 guide drive-out fee per trip may apply. We confirm the full group total before booking.
The website hiking package includes guiding, a first-aid kit, permits and documentation to hike in the area, with hiking equipment available on request. Meals, accommodation and guest transport are excluded. Tell us what equipment you need and whether you have your own vehicle when enquiring.
